The Kusanya Cafe, in Swahili, means "to come together". This is exactly what Phil Sipka, the executive director, and Donald Highsmith, the manager are trying to do. Kusanya Cafe is a nonprofit organization located on 69th and Green (825 W. 69th Street. It was established with the intention to shed a more positive and hopeful light on improving the community. Being a nonprofit, they have very affordable prices, in hopes to use the space as a social gathering for the people in the community. Kusanya Cafe promotes healthy eating alternatives, and is described as a "rare sit-down dining experience".
R.A.G.E. Resident Association of Greater Englewood
The executive director of the Kusanya Cafe, Phil Sipka, is also a member of the Resident Association of Greater Englewood. R.A.G.E. was one of the supporters of the Kusanya Cafe, and they still help the cafe thrive today.
Their mission statement is to “make a change in the community by using communication promoting for positivity through solution-based approaches to make a better Englewood.” They are working towards this by setting five main goals for themselves:
With the help of their members and supporters, ages ranging from 14 years old to well within their 70’s, R.A.G.E. has accomplished so many things; including getting residents, schools, and various organizations to come together and work towards a common positive goal. They also have a TV show that can be viewed on channel 21 (comcast).
